The Power of Neuroplasticity for Dancers

As a new school and professional year begins, dancers naturally start thinking about what they want to accomplish: a higher extension, stronger jumps, more turns, greater flexibility, or perhaps a new role.

But what if, alongside those goals, we asked a different question?

Who do I want to become?

Olympic skier Eileen Gu has spoken about neuroplasticity and the role it plays in her approach to growth. Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to adapt and change in response to experience. As we learn and practice, our brains adapt by strengthening and developing neural pathways that support new skills, patterns, and behaviors.

For dancers, this is particularly exciting.

Dance requires an extraordinary amount of communication between the brain and body. Every tendu, jump, pirouette, and rehearsal asks your nervous system to coordinate strength, balance, musicality, memory, spatial awareness, timing, and precise movement.

Every time you practice, you are giving your nervous system information about what you want it to learn.

You Are Practicing More Than Steps

Think about learning a pirouette.

At first, you may have to consciously think about every component: the preparation, spotting, arms, supporting leg, alignment, and coordination. With repetition, the movement begins to feel more familiar. Eventually, parts of it can become more automatic.

That is learning, and neuroplasticity is part of what makes that learning possible.

But here’s the important part: we aren’t only practicing our technique. We are also practicing our habits and responses.

If you consistently dance with tension in your shoulders, you may reinforce that movement pattern. If you repeatedly approach a correction with “I can’t do that,” you are also practicing a particular response to challenge.

But what happens when you approach the same difficulty with curiosity?

What can I learn from this?

What feels different when I try it another way?

What can I practice today?

That shift doesn’t magically make a difficult step easy. But it creates a different relationship with the learning process and gives your brain the opportunity to adapt through practice.

Neuroplasticity Is for Everyone

Neuroplasticity isn’t just for young dancers.

Our brains remain capable of adapting and learning throughout our lives. Whether you are a beginning student, a professional dancer, a teacher, or an adult returning to dance, you can continue developing new skills and patterns.

Of course, neuroplasticity doesn’t mean we can simply think ourselves into becoming anything we want. Our anatomy, genetics, training history, age, and physical limitations all matter. But our starting point does not have to determine our entire trajectory.

This is an important distinction for dancers. You may not have the same body, training history, or natural abilities as the dancer next to you, and you don’t need to.

Your job is to keep giving your nervous system the information, practice, and experiences that move you toward your own goals.

Practice Who You Want to Become

So as you begin this new year, think beyond the goals you want to achieve.

Think about the dancer and the person you want to become.

Do you want to be stronger?

More focused?

More resilient?

More confident?

More receptive to corrections?

More willing to take risks?

More patient with yourself when something doesn’t come easily?

Then ask yourself:

What can I practice today that moves me one step closer to becoming that person?

Because every class, rehearsal, correction, and challenge is an opportunity to learn.

You are not simply training your body.

You are training your brain, too.
